more like a journey in space and time
The walking tour starts outside the Acropolis Metro Station. After the group has been acquainted and relevant directions have been offered by the historian-archaeologist, it heads west walking on Dionysius the Areopagite Street, one of the most beautiful pedestrianized streets of Athens.
The first stop is next to the Dionysian Theater on the southeast slope of the Acropolis hill, hearing the basics about ancient Greek theater and its role in Athenian society.
Walking parallel to the archaeological site, standing outside of it, the second stop is the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, which exhibits the evolution of the theater as a constructed physical space, but also as a form of art, from the Greek-Hellenistic era, towards the Roman times.
Leaving the Acropolis behind, the group continues to head West through the Mouseion Hill (also known as The Philopappos hill) and the Pnyx Hill. The group encounters the ruins of an ancient gate of the first wall of Ancient Athens and then heads north towards the Pnyx. On the walk two stops are made to see the Deme and the streets of Ancient Athens whilst the participants can admire the view from the top of the hill, all the way to the Piraeus Port and the sea.
Turning east, the group encounters a breath-taking view: here is the best spot to enjoy the view to the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, the Mount Lycabettus, and of the modern city today. Additionally, the group can now see the expanse of Pnyx in front of them, where Ecclesia, the Parliament of Athenian Democracy, held its meetings.
Following, there is a brief stop outside the nearby National Observatory of Athens, where the group is offered some information about the history of the building, and then, the group heads to the Herakleidon Museum, where they have the opportunity to admire specific exhibits from the exhibition: “Eureka. Science, Art and Technology of the Ancient Greeks” that are relevant to the walk.
At the end of this journey, over refreshments, the historian-archaeologist answers questions and offers advice to the group about what the visitors must see and do, during their visit in Athens, as well as what to avoid during their stay.
